EMMA

in Shadow Town

After spending most of the next day reading whatever speculation she could find about superpowers and what happened to Icy Tundra, Emma needed a break. She headed to the middle school her sister taught at to surprise her.

When she made her way into the school office for a visitor’s pass, she immediately found Becky. She was crouched in front of a boy wearing a black t-shirt displaying the periodic table of the elements. Hmmm. He looked familiar. He had sandy blond hair, thick glasses, and a face littered with freckles. Why was he in the office? Was he sick? Hurt himself?

The sharp tone in her sister’s voice told her differently. “It doesn’t matter if your uncle’s the mayor, that just makes this situation worse.”

The boy’s voice hadn’t grown deeper yet. Emma guessed he was about twelve. He folded his arms over his chest and leaned back in the chair. “I’d like to see your proof.”

“You know there’s no proof. The video footage has been erased.”

“Then, why are you keeping me here?”

When Becky noticed Emma, she motioned toward the hallway. “You can go. I’ll let your mother know our concerns when she arrives. I just see your potential and want so much for you.”

With wide eyes, the boy took off, and Becky led her sister back to her classroom.

“Rough day?” Emma asked.

Becky blew out a breath. “That boy. He’s too smart, yet refuses to apply himself.”

“Trouble with his grades?”

Becky laughed. “Oh no, his grades are perfect. He makes sure of that.”

“So what’s the problem?”

“He’s a computer hacker. He gives himself grades and never does the work. We have him on a manual system, but those papers and files always end up missing too.”

“You said he was the mayor’s nephew? Is that the boy that almost died in the earthquake? Um… Kyle Burg?”

“Yeah, that’s him. Not only is he gifted, but his mother’s a supergenius that works at SynPharmaTek. I’m sure the boy will be a supergenius too. It’s an interesting family. I wonder if he doesn’t get enough attention at home. Anyway, what brings you to Shadow Town?”

“I had some business with Mayor Payne, but wanted to visit with you too.”

“Where’s the hubby?”

“Busy with work.” And saving the city.

“If I didn’t know better, I’d say he didn’t like me. He’s never with you.”

Emma sighed. She’d long gotten over the loneliness of being a superhero’s wife. It took a strong woman. “Luckily, you know better.” Emma smiled and gave her sister a friendly shoulder nudge. “I was hoping I could pick up Samantha and take her to your house.”

“Oh, that’d be great. I have some extra paperwork to fill out before I go home, anyway.”

Emma’s stomach filled with excitement while Becky called the after-school daycare and made arrangements. With a nod, Emma headed toward the door. “I’ll have her back at your place before midnight.”

“Seven’s her bedtime. You know that.”

“Okay. Eleven.” She winked at her sister and disappeared through the door.
